Surveyor's Office of Brown County

The County Surveyor’s Office does NOT provide private surveying services per State Law. You must hire a private surveyor.

The duties of the elected County Surveyor are addressed in Indiana Code: Title 36, Article 2, Chapter 12, Sections 1 to 15. The County Surveyor is elected to a four year term. Due to the technical nature of the position and the expertise required, the County Surveyor's Office has no term limits.
The Brown County Surveyor's office maintains records crucial to the location and mapping of land parcels within Brown County, and also maintains the mapping of land parcels for Brown County GIS (Geographic Information System). Some specific items that the surveyor's office maintains are legal survey books, old grant books, Section Corner Records for section corners as established per the sectionalized land surveying system, and Historic County Maps (ie Railroad maps, INDOT right of way maps and County Road Maps, along with Miscellaneous surveys) These Items are in the process of being scanned in an effort to make them available online. Please contact the office to obtain access to items that have been scanned.
Brown County does not have a Drainage Board or maintain any Legal Drains.
About the Office
The Brown County Surveyor’s office is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. 

This office has limited staff and is subject to work outside of the office.  It is recommended to call to ensure someone will be in the office to assist you.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find my property corners?

     If monumentation has been set, a metal detector can help locate the metal pins at property corners.  Depending             on the accuracy needed on the property line, a private surveyor may need to verify the monument location.

How do I find if there is a survey on file for my property?
      Deeds and Plats are available in the County Recorder's office.

How do I find out if my property is in a Flood Zone?
      Flood zone determinations are made by the Brown County Planning Department.

How do I pay for my property to be surveyed and how much would it cost?
      You will need to call a private surveyor for this information. Surveyors can be found on the Indiana Society of Professional Land Surveyors website, the County Surveyor's Office does not provide private survey services.

How do I resolve a property line dispute?
      Hire a private surveyor to verify the accuracy of the neighbor's survey.

How do I request a verification of my business location (State Form 44184) for a alcohol permit?
      Fill out the form and submit to the county surveyors office for approval.

How do I request a recommendation for a private surveyor to use?
      As a government office, we cannot direct you to any particular company. We recommend that you refer to 
            
 ISPLS.org website to search for a licensed surveyor and go from there. Below is a short list of surveyors that
